Finding Eden

Bob Doyle, the Director responsible for Course Maintenance, has asked me to be Volunteer Coordinator at Eden. Please bear with me as I orientate myself to this position. My hope is that you don’t ever feel that you “have to”, “should”, or have any other forceful feeling about volunteering. Volunteer is exactly what it means, you do something because you feel it’s worthwhile, you want to do it and you hope some good will come out of it.

This year is expected to be especially trying because of the late season start, and in particular, the lost early green fee’ers and tournament revenues resulting from COVID-19. So, volunteers will be especially key for all golf courses across the province and many in Canada, including at Eden.

Going forward, I’m intending to post volunteer opportunities on our website, and at the course. If you see something you’re interested in doing, please complete the pdfVolunteer Registration Form as this will provide me with your contact information, any particular skills you have along with your preferred times and days you’d like to volunteer.

You can volunteer once for an hour or every day if you like, there’s no shortage of things to do. NOTE: Volunteers, other than the mowers, will be asked to use their own equipment, gas and fuel, and bring their own refreshments. This is to reduce the possibility of transferring the COVID-19 virus and thus for the protection of the volunteers and staff by minimizing the handling of tools by multiple parties. At the time of this writing, it is not anticipated that Eden will have kitchen services at the time of opening.

Some of the volunteer activities require little to no previous experience, ie., picking up brush, cleaning toilets / portable toilets. However some activities are very skills oriented, ie. building staircases, installing windows, etc.. For that reason, the Volunteer Registration Form will assist me in organizing a useful volunteer data bank.

I will update the volunteer opportunities list as things come up but at the present, here are some volunteer opportunities which arise from time to time:

  1. Mowing the fairway rough (if you‘re interested in mowing, please advise ASAP as Bob Doyle is planning a mowing orientation on how to use the mowers the week of May 18th).
  2. General cleanup.
  3. Raking and picking up branches and debris on and off the fairways.
  4. Cutting shrubs with a gas trimmer.
  5. Whipper snipping grass.
  6. Course Marshall to ensure that social distancing is followed while playing (anticipated government imposed opening requirement).
  7. Coring the greens or tee boxes.
  8. Cleaning and sanitizing golf carts after they’re returned at the Pro Shop.
  9. Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms and/or portable toilets. NOTE: We’re waiting for direction from the NSGA regarding what will be required.
  10. Painting, for example painting of posts and marker stakes (we’ll be remarking the whole course either before or shortly after opening).
  11. Building and installing stairs.
  12. Hedge trimming.
  13. Assisting to recycle cans and bottles.
